Here’s a synopsis of the book that’s been called “the voice of reason in an industry full of hype”:

Internet-based telephony has become a viable solution, piquing the interest of companies small and large. The primary reason for migrating to VoIP is cost, as it equalizes the costs of long distance calls, local calls, and e-mails to fractions of a penny per use. But the real enterprise turn-on is how VoIP empowers businesses to mold and customize telecom and datacom solutions using a single, cohesive networking platform. These business drivers are so compelling that legacy telephony is going the way of the dinosaur, yielding to Voice over IP as the dominant enterprise communications paradigm.

Developed from real-world experience by a senior developer, O’Reilly’s Switching to VoIP provides solutions for the most common VoIP migration challenges. So if you’re a network professional who is migrating from a traditional telephony system to a modern, feature-rich network, this book is a must-have. You’ll discover the strengths and weaknesses of circuit-switched and packet-switched networks, how VoIP systems impact network infrastructure, as well as solutions for common challenges involved with IP voice migrations. Among the challenges discussed and projects presented:

If you’d like more information on EV-DO technology, which promises laptop users blazing speed over cellular networks, look no further than David Pogue’s excellent story in the New York Times. He does a really good job of explaining with EV-DO is and what it promises, as well as highlights some of the cellular cards you would need to plug into your laptop’s PC card slot. He does point out that the service is pricey—$80 a month, but Verizon Wireless is the only kid on the block to offer EV-DO, so they can get away with it. We’ll see what happens when debuts its own service later this year.

Samsung I730

The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg weighs in with a review of the new Samsung i730 smartphone, which boasts the ability to surf the Web and e-mail functionality at broadband speeds. Basically, he likes the i730 because it delivers on its promises for making calls, accessing the Web, sending and receiving e-mails, playing music, and displaying pictures. However, he does point out drawbacks such as its size, low battery life, and having to use the stylus for most applications. Plus, the $599 price tag certainly can be a drawback by itself. On the whole, Mossberg gives it a fairly steady thumbs-up.

Bluetooth-enabled headsets have gained significant popularity lately and the latest announcement from Broadcom might just add to their near-ubiquitous status. The company’s Blutonium BCM2037 chip features a Bluetooth baseband and radio which, according to the company, makes it the first headset-specific chip with EDR. The BCM2037 is designed to deliver end-to-end streaming digital stereo at near CD audio quality. In addition, support for the remote control profile (AVRCP) allows a stereo headset to control a variety of remote music sources.

Joystiq is breaking out with well over 100,000 page views a day… the guys over there are really kicking butt with their coverage of E3. Yesterday they did live coverage of the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 events and they are coving the Nintendo Revolution event live right now!

Live Ninetendo Revolution coverage:

Show Down

May 17, at E3, is going to be the day for the inevitable showdown among the three gaming platforms : Nintendo Revolution, Xbox2/Xenon, and Playstation 3. Rumors are circulating that Sony will try to jump the gun with an “official” unveiling the the third playstation some time before E3. With a new CEO and troubled times in the music hardware group, Sony is probably going to bet big on the Playstation 3 launch. In response, more rumors fly that Microsoft will somehow release Halo 3 on whatever day Sony chooses to put the Playstation 3 up for sale. Will these actions really matter? Will the prices for the consoles fall so quickly that the avid gamer will just buy both platforms, even if only for 1, or 2 games. So the platform makers take a loss on each platform, while the game market is split more evenly, such that big hits will be released EA-style, on both platforms (they usually release on multiple platforms, don’t they?). What difference will the platform make - is the video game industry about to become all about the games?

Sony’s a great company in many ways, and they’re going to engineer something that’s got some decent capability. There’s no doubt about that. They have partners that have succeeded with them. I think we’re doing a really good job of nurturing some of their partners. Their box didn’t look bad, it looked ok—but I like our better. It’s a little bit hard for me to laud the competitor, but Sony’s a good company, and we have to assume that they’re going to execute some things quite well. I was shocked that they didn’t have more to say about online [gaming]; I just think of online as pretty fundamental at this stage. They didn’t have much to say about online, and what they said was more than what they’ve said before, which I think is an interesting thing. We’re both pretty keyed up on HD games—you can take the format and the disc aside—but we’re both pretty keyed up on HD games. Of course we love what we’re doing with personalization, but they were mostly about performance in their discussion last night.

That's the pre-Pack Windows Mobile 5.0

Today, Information Week reports what's aready been in the wind - the utility is set to be made available this week, with pre-builds into handsets coming this fall.

Devices armed with the Pack will be able to connect directly with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, rather than having to go through the additional middleware and servers that BlackBerry's email servers and others need to.

For several days after the upgrade was announced a couple of months ago, BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion investors reacted with a freaked quiver and a series of aftershocks. I wouldn't be surprised to see the same type of reaction this week. Yet because everyone knew this was coming, perhaps the reaction will be somewhat muted, and shorter in duration.

Halo 2 Glitch

A cool glitch is to be able to shoot through walls with the tank.
You aren't really shooting through the wall, your gun is through the wall. This glitch can be hard to do sometimes, and easy other times. Simply move the tank so that it is as close as possible to the wall you want to shoot through, for example a base in blood gultch. Nest move the end of the turret so that it is sticking through the wall, and in the room the enemy payer is in. Now simply shoot, hopefully it works and kills the enemy. This works best with thin walls.

More Halo 2 BULL

With the amount of huge profits Bungie/Microsoft made off Halo 2 we simply ask that all Halo 2 downloadable content shall be made free for people who pay for Microsoft Live right now.

None of this pay a 'premium' later stuff bull. We already pay a premium for Live. Not to mention purchasing the game, Xbox, etc. Bungie/Microsoft bragged that Halo 2 made over $125 million the first day...more than Spider-Man 2 weekend opening and yet they are too cheap to give their fans the multiplayer levels for free that should have been included in the Halo 2 release in the first place.

My first true comment Thanks Halo2 BULL

Idiots that claim they can beat Halo 2 in 9 hours. Such crap.
We are stuck in Legendary at Cairo Station. Stuck at the point where you kill the two Grunts up on the walkway in Plasma Turrets. Probably stuck for 3 weeks now. No way to kill the Silver dual-weilding Elites. You can plant a plasma grenade on them and they keep coming at you.
Some walkthroughs claim the plasma pistol and various combinations will work.
How in the h#ll are you supposed to change weapons and get that close??? We've gotten down to about 3 at the end and we're either too far away... or whatever.
There is no way we'll get past this. There are no cheats which we wouldn't use anyway.
Has anyone else encountered this section and being stuck?

More Halo2 BULL

There are a lot of guys better then me. These are the guys that don't have a life. They never have a date, go dancing... or LIVE in any way.

They eat, sleep, and breathe Halo2... and they play it night-and-day... almost non-stop... 24-hours-a-day. And they are absolutely crazy. I've seen guys who've got a 27 or 28 ranking in "Team Slayer"... and these guys are legit. (I've also seen cheaters ranking at 50... but that's just a joke).

Anyway... these guys are so good they even get ME pissed-off when I'm playing. They definitely DO NOT put my skills to shame, that's for sure... but they're damn good -- there's no doubt about it.

But getting them to give you the time of day is impossible -- let along convincing them to teach you what they know.

Halo 2 Cheats

Cheat: Envy skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: Delta Halo
Word: Envy
Effect: Cloak instead of Flashlight, 5 second cloak with 10 second recharge

When you first come out of the big building and see the turret and 5/6 shield up on the wall there is a wall over to the left hand side with the two grunt turrets on it, the big block and door are at the far end of that wall... In the room that the block is blocking there are two dead grunts and two plasma swords. There's a door being blocked by a rock. Jump on the rock. Then jump on the ledge that's located above the blocked doorway. Turn left and jump up on another ledge. Grenade jump up to where you'll find Two Red Elites - That become cloaked, surrounding a skull. Pick it up, and it reads Envy.

Cheat: Assassins Skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: Regret
Word: Assassins
Effect: All enemies in game are permanently cloaked, AI cannot see them and so are no help at all.

Just after you get off the gondola, and go in the structure, there is a big block of stone, jump on that an you can get on a ledge that leads out to the Covenant turrets, facing back towards the structure, jump up another level around the right side of the structure, It is pretty straight lined from here. You should find the Skull on a ledge when you make it around. No visible change to the HUD, BUT all enemies become invisible.

Cheat: Anger Skull
Difficulty: Legendary Level: Gravemind Word: Anger Effect: ??????? Here is another Halo 2 skull: Fight all the way through the Covenant city until you reach the outdoors. As soon as you are outside, stick to the right-hand side and walk along the wall. You should see a Covenant wall thingy with a red rail on it. Jump up to it (crouch jump helps) and at the end there is the Anger skull in a small grav-lift.

Cheat: Iron Skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: High Charity
Word: Iron
Effect: Allies are immune to melee attacks

On the final grav-lift on "high Charity", look up. A skull will pass you by. Hold X as it passes you to receive the status.

Cheat: Famine Skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: Oracle
Word: famine
Effect: Weapons picked up only have half ammo.

After getting off the long elevator ride, you will come to a room where convent and flood are fighting below you, and you have to break the glass to get to where they are fighting. If you crouch/grenade jump up on the opposite side of where you came down, the skull should be up there.

Cheat: Black Eye Skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: Great Journey
Word: Black Eye
Effect: Shield won’t regenerate, when you melee someone you get energy power back, so if you melee someone you get a little bit of shield. So you can get a bit at a time all the way to overshield!

SGT Johnson will pilot the scarab and shoot at a building I am calling the Control Tower. If you take a banshee to the tower you will notice that, aside from where spires jut out of it, it has a round slope all the way around. If you take the banshee right up to the slope and as high as you can go, you can almost get over it. Here you must jump out of your banshee to land on the less steep part of the slope. If you turn your banshee to the side or all the way around, it may make it easier to land on the less steep part. Also, try to have your banshee land on a platform below, so you can use it to get back. Once you are on the slope, climb the rest of the way up it. If you are on the right of the door, then you have to jump onto the ledge next to the main part of the building, and then walk up a steep part in the direction of the door. Walk up that, then around and down on the other side. On this side (left of the door from scarab's perspective) you can walk onto the hills and grass. You will notice several angled spires, some of which connect to the building. You must climb the one that is directly opposite the door you would use to enter the tower. It's steep but you can walk up it. I suggest jumping while walking to speed up the process. At the top is a skull which gives you the "black eye" effect - you only recover shields by meleeing enemies. This is only found on legendary. Reverse the process to get back to your banshee (hopefully) or just jump off a cliff and the effect will stay with you.

Cheat: Infinite Skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: Quarantine Zone
Word: Sputnik
Effect: Explosions and melee have more of an effect, which may be the result of less gravity.

From the start of the level, look to your left for an Elite. To the left of the elite there is a tunnel. Head into the tunnel and go straight until you reach a cliff. Now turn left and follow the cliff till you reach a rock wall. To the right of the wall and the cliff is a narrow passage, skull is at the end of that passage.

Cheat: Thunderstorm Skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: Cairo Station
Word: Thunderstorm
Effect: Makes Covenant "silver" and More Difficult

It’s past the two loading docks past the armory type place and in the next big room. It’s in the very highest location in the room. It’s under a trash can, I hit it out of the way and its just laying there.

Cheat: Mythic Skull
Difficulty: Legendary
Level: Sacred Icon
Effect: Unknown

After coming down from a piston, about halfway through the level, you’ll come to a room completely filled with Flood fog. Go into the room and you’ll see a stack of crates. Jump on top (while cloaked would probably work better, so the Flood don’t notice you), and across to the next highest level. If you look in the last hole in the wall, you’ll see the skull in with a dead Flood.

Unlockable: Blind Mode
At the beginning of the episode Outskirts, go through the first opening but do not head down the ramp. Instead, jump up onto the flourescent lamps over the doorway. From there, you can jump-crouch-jump onto the sloped roof to the left (jump and hold the crouch button at the peak of the jump to get onto the ledge).

Once on the rooftop, look for a narrow alleyway directly to your left. At the end of the alleyway are some grenades and a skull. Picking up the skull (hold the X button) will unlock blind mode, which removes all traces of your HUD from Halo 2 single player. To get them back, save and quit. Then choose Cairo station, save and quit and then choose the level Outskirts.

Halo 2 Master Chief

The defeat of the Covenant in the first Halo game was only a temporary victory, as the alien attackers have renewed their mission to wipe out all of humanity. Despite the human military force's and Master Chief's efforts, the Covenant have breeched the Earth's defenses and have left its inhabitants in a dismal situation. In the midst of desperation, players assume the role of Master Chief and lead the resistance against the Covenant to save the people of Earth from a gruesome demise. Halo 2 will feature an immense and epic single player mode, as the story picks up where it ended in the first game. In addition to the single player mode, Halo 2 will also feature a redesigned multiplayer mode. While the first game limited players to LAN connectivity, Halo 2 takes multiplayer missions online by way of Xbox Live.

Halo 2

You've probably heard about the new ability to dual-wield smaller weapons. It’s exactly as cool as you've hoped it is, and it's perfect for fighting in close quarters, when grenades are too risky to use. You will also find new tools of the trade, like the Battle Rifle, and tweaks to classics like the Pistol and Needler.

Game Types
Old friends like Slayer are joined by new varieties, such as Assault, where you need to plant a bomb in the enemy base, and one-flag Capture the Flag (CTF). Factor in downloadable content, and Halo 2 is going to have some serious legs!

Quality maps are the backbone of any shooter, and the maps in Halo 2 are positively sublime. This time, there is a greater emphasis on asymmetrical team-play maps, like the amazing Zanzibar map that Bungie debuted at E3.

Online Play
Halo 2 has full Xbox Live support, including some of its own online features you won’t find in any other Xbox Live game. "Parties" of Friends make it easy to stick together from game to game, and the matchmaking features ensure you'll find the best possible opponents, according to skill and connection speed. As Bungie told us, matchmaking can be a "real nail-biter" because you'll always be playing against people who are close to your skill level.
