Halo 3 was the most played Xbox 360

No surprise as Halo 3 becomes the most played game by users connected to Xbox LIVE - Gears of War pushed down to second.
For the week beginning September 24 Halo 3 was the most played Xbox 360 game by users connected to Xbox LIVE. Bungie's blockbuster sequel demotes Epic Games' Gears of War down to No.2, with Rainbow Six Vegas, Madden NFL 08 and the Call of Duty 4 beta taking places three to five.

Halo 3

Halo 3 has become the biggest entertainment launch in history, garnering an estimated $228 million (US$170 million) in sales in the US alone in the first 24 hours. The Xbox 360 title beat previous records set by blockbuster movie releases such as Spider-Man 3 and novels such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Halo 2

Microsoft estimates gamers have logged nearly 1 billion hours playing "Halo 2" against one another on Xbox Live, making the game the top-played title on the company's online network three years after its release. Half of the top 10 games played worldwide via Xbox Live are first-person shooters, according to the company, including games such as "Call of Duty" that feature traditional real-world military combat instead of the fanciful sci-fi plots of the "Halo" series, "Metroid Prime 3" and "BioShock."

Halo 3 meets commercial expectations

We're well ahead of where we were with Halo 2," said Microsoft's Chris Di Cesare in an interview with Brandweek. "In the year of the summer blockbuster 'three-quel,' the biggest one is going to be one you don't go to a theater to see."
To ensure Halo 3 meets commercial expectations, Microsoft has invested heavily in a five-phase marketing blitz in the hopes of outselling the combined 11 million copies of the first two games.

Halo 3

Halo 3 due for worldwide release on September 25, are enormous. McFarlane Toys is so confident in Halo 3's prospects it is already building a line of action figures, led by Halo protagonist Master Chief. And with the new games console war just ramping up between the Xbox 360, Sony's Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft is banking on Halo 3 securing a commanding lead.
The pressure on Jarrard and the team at Bungie is no doubt bolstered by the glowing expectations of analysts, who predict the title will give Microsoft's loss-making gaming division its first profitable quarter.
Goldman-Sachs's analysts expect Halo 3 to contribute $US170 million ($193 million) in revenue to Microsoft's bottom line in its first week of sales. To put it another way, they expect Microsoft to ship to retailers one copy of Halo 3 for every three Xbox 360s in the world.

Halo 3 Xbox 360

According to Ars Technica, the following paragraph was modified by SCEE's Liverpool Offices before Wikipedia administrators removed the last line in bold:
"Halo 3, the third game in the best-selling Xbox game franchise, is a highly anticipated first-person shooter under development by Bungie Studios for the Xbox 360 and is expected to "set a new high water mark" for next-generation games, although it won't look any better than Halo 2."
To be fair, the Wikipedia entry could have been made by a non-Sony employee merely using internet access while on the premises. Additionally, Halo 3 graphics have been criticized for not matching the visuals of Gears of War, a game that was released last year on Xbox 360.

Xbox 360s Nintendo DS and the Game Boy Advance tracks consoles sold to consumers, and not to retailers and other outlets. While the number of Xbox 360s shipped since the console's release in November 2005 maybe slightly higher than Wii shipments, which started in November 2006, more of the latter consoles have actually made to the hands of consumers. Shortages of Wiis remain in most regions around the world, and units are typically sold shortly after they become available, said.
On a regional basis, far more Wiis than Xbox 360s were sold in Japan, 3.46 million versus 430,000, respectively. Retailers sold more Xbox 360s than Wiis in other countries. The Xbox 360 dominated the Americas, including South America, United States and Canada, with 6.75 million Xbox units sold versus 4.24 million Wiis.
Meanwhile, The NPD Group said Nintendo shipped 425,000 Wiis in July, while Microsoft shipped 170,000 Xbox 360s, and Sony 159,000 PS 3. From January through July, sales of all consoles reached $2.72 billion, nearly 72 % more than the same period a year ago. Other players included in the numbers were the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS and the Game Boy Advance.

Xbox 360 console

Microsoft moved to lower the price of its Xbox 360 console in Europe on Monday, about two weeks after it made a similar move in the United States and Canada. In EU countries, the price of the high-end console drops by 50 euros to 349.99 euros ($470 USD), while the Core model drops 20 euros to 279.99 euros ($378 USD). In addition, the Xbox 360 Elite will premiere at a price of 449.99 euros on August 24.

The price cuts are intended to fend off stronger than anticipated competition from Nintendo and its Wii, which have been selling at a torrid pace since its release last November. Additionally, Microsoft is hoping a cheaper price will help it to expand its core fan base, which primarily consists of younger men. Analysts say that much of the Wii's success can be explained by its appeal to a much wider consumer base

Halo 3 Epsilon

Halo 3 is winding down. While there’s still a considerable amount of dudes here on site, playing through the game, testing the game, filing bugs and fixing bugs, the game is roughly 99.9% complete. That last .1% percent is pretty important, however. Right now, some testing is being done in a controlled retail environment via our Halo 3 Epsilon. You’ve probably seen reports online or even folks on your friends’ list playing it, so here’s the scoop:
The Epsilon is a closed, final phase testing for Halo 3. We won’t be making the Epsilon available for public consumption, so while that’s immensely disappointing for folks hoping that Friends and Family invites would be extended for the Epsilon, just know that each day you wait in agony is another day closer to September 25.

Halo 2's 125 million

Variety report the 155 million USD target, which would beat Halo 2's 125 million USD, and even surpass the largest opening film gross delivered by Spider-Man 3, the current record holder. "We did $125 million last time," Microsoft director of creative marketing Chris Di Cesare told Variety magazine. "We're confident we can do better."
Given the higher retail price of the Collectors Edition and the Legendary Edition and the hype already surrounding the third in the series it becomes apparent that sales figures don't even need to pass Halo 2's for Microsoft to take the record, with the game looking like a sure-fire blockbuster.

Microsoft this week said that more than 1 million copies of Halo 3 have been pre-sold to consumers. The sci-fi sequel will be released on Sept. 25 in the U.S.

Halo 3 incendiary grenade

Halo 3, and that the game will also feature an incendiary grenade of some type. Bungie confirmed that the flamethrower will:
Fire approximately nine three-second bursts of napalm.
Have a range of about 44 feet.
Deal out damage over time. Meaning that if you get flamed, your health will go down gradually as you stay on fire (no word if anything can put it out)
Torch bubble shields. You’ll be OK if you stay inside (will walking through it set you on fire?)
Be able to set vehicles on fire
Be a turret-based weapon, meaning you'll move to a third-person view when you use it.
It will be a new grenade type known as the firebomb, and will compliment the flamethrower by using a similar type of liquid fire which will light the ground around where it is deployed ablaze. Players can use this feature to their advantage by creating small walls of flames that can block incoming enemies from walking through without taking damage.

Bungie confirmed what many had hoped would be included into the upcoming release of Halo 3. One player will control the Master Chief, another the Arbiter, while the remaining players will take control of two brand new Elite characters. Halo 2

A library in Mount Prospect, Illinois launched a Halo 2 event to attract more children, but controversy has followed in the wake of the decision.
The game bears an "M for Mature" rating, delivered by the industry's own ESRB. In light of the rating, the library has asked participating youth to bring permission slips signed by their parents.

That move has not appeased David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family, which is based in Minnesota. "I think it borders on irresponsibility to sponsor an activity for kids as young as 12 that the industry itself has said is for adults," he said.

Gameplay mechanics of Halo 3

High-resolution, parallax textures? H’m, certainly didn’t look like it back then. But there’s no doubt that Bungie has toiled away at refining both the look and gameplay mechanics of Halo 3. As you’ll quite clearly see in the screenshots below, the game has come a long way from its not-so-humble beginnings on the original big black box.
But this game isn’t just about the graphics. While the [visuals] may have been the driving force behind Halo 2, there’s some fun-sounding gameplay features included with this final outing in the Halo trilogy: More vehicles, more damage effects, more enemies, more hijacking, new weapons, bigger maps, and more interactivity are just some of the things that will be in the final cut.

Brute shot Halo 3

Everything has constantly gone through a little bit of flex. Probably the biggest change will be the Brute shot which is up to six rounds in the clip now, and it fires a little more directly. It does not have as much gravity in the projectile making it a little easier to use. It will bounce on extreme angles but most of the time doesn't.

New maps Epitaph, Shrine and Last Resort Halo 3

Three new maps were revealed during IGN's visit: Epitaph, Shrine and Last Resort. Epitaph, a gothic Forerunner structure in the shape of a temple, is designed for close-quarters combat, shoving Spartans into thin, dimly-lit corridors. Two man-cannons on opposite ends of the cathedral propel players across the map toward an energy sword hovering on a gravity lift in the arena's center.
Last Resort is a re-imagining of the Halo 2 standby Zanzibar. Additions include a second fortress entrance for vehicles that is blocked by a cement wall which can be unlocked with its own control panel inside the structure. The walkways extending in the air have become more complex and are lined with broken guardrails.
Finally, Shrine is a barren desert peppered with aging Forerunner structures. The largest map to date, Shrine is the length of Valhalla, but four times its width. A variety of special effects (heatwaves, sand dust and shadows) make the visual upgrades from the previous game significantly more noticeable.
A new vehicle with Brute roots rolled onto the scene. The Brute Chopper is part Harley and another part Forerunner hovercraft, boosting across maps with a battering ram for a front wheel. Other arsenal capabilities include twin-mounted cannons that shoot ammunition resembling the Brute Spiker guns.
A new piece of equipment called the Jammer disrupts everyone's radar upon deployment. Red dots of activity will sporadically appear and leave lingering effects for those in its vicinity when it detonates.

Halo 3 Toys

Finally, some details of figurines coming in 2008 have been released. The toys will be created by McFarlane Toys, who just recently signed an agreement to do so with Microsoft. Here’s what you could pick up next Spring:
MASTER CHIEF — The protagonist of the Halo series stands at 5 inches tall, and has more than 18 points of articulation. Equipped with his trademark assault rifle, Master Chief’s mission is to protect Earth against the Covenant, an alien empire threatening the world in the 26th century. Biological and cybernetic enhancements and rigorous military training have resulted in Master Chief’s unquestioned status as the finest soldier mankind has ever produced.
BRUTE CHIEFTAIN — The highest rank in the Brute hierarchy is the Chieftain, whose articulated figure is the tallest of the series at 6 inches. Belonging to the Covenant, the Brute Chieftain carries the gravity hammer, a close-range weapon with the ability to alter gravity at a local level and crush his enemies and surroundings.
CORTANA — Developed by the United Nations Space Command (UNSC), Cortana is a smart A.I. with the ability to project herself as a holographic image and be transferred between computer systems, including the cybernetic armor of Master Chief. This figure’s base features an LED light that illuminates her 4.5 inch-tall figure.
JACKAL SNIPER — To the benefit of the Covenant, Jackal Snipers have incredibly sharp reflexes and deadly aim. Standing at 5 inches, the Jackal Sniper is equipped with its signature beam rifle, which has the ability for long range shooting and a high degree of damage.
GRUNT 2-Pack — At 3.5 inches tall, the Grunt is a menace to the human race, and represents the vast majority of the Covenant infantry. The Grunts are the lowest tier of the Covenant hierarchy, and move in packs. They are expected to unquestioningly obey the commands of their Brute commanders. Outfitted with weapons including the Plasma Pistol and Needler, the Grunts may not seem much more than cannon fodder, but in groups, they can be deadly.
WARTHOG — As the most widely recognized vehicle of the UNSC, the Warthog is a ground vehicle capable of carrying up to three soldiers. Known as the best all-around vehicle for its power, adaptability and toughness, the Warthog measures 3 inches in length and is built of die-cast metal and plastic.
GHOST — The Ghost is a single-seat, anti-gravity vehicle used by the Covenant. Mounted with twin plasma cannons, the Ghost is a rapid-attack vehicle designed for speed and maneuverability. The Ghost is 3 inches long and made with die-cast metal and plastic.
BRUTE CHOPPER — The Brute Chopper makes its debut in Halo 3. A single-wheeled vehicle, the Brute Chopper will prove invaluable to the Covenant’s campaign against humanity. With a length of 3 inches, the Brute Chopper will be made of die-cast metal and plastic.

Halo 2 arrives on PC

Halo 2 arrives on PC, but there’s a couple of stings in the tale. First, it’s three years late – your console cousins have been happily blasting away since late 2004.
Second, it’s only available on Vista. We wonder what brainiac came up with that idea?
Let’s face it. With all the hype surrounding this series there’s going to be a few PC gamers out there who’re intrigued.
We can say right from the off that Halo 2 just can’t compare with the likes of Half Life 2 and Stalker. Microsoft’s blaster may have been the nuts a few years ago, but the first person shooter genre has moved on a fair bit. Gamers forum

compare "Halo 2" and "Halo 3

the "Halo" line is Xbox's ace in the hole. On its release day, $125 million worth of "Halo 2" games were sold. (The "Spider-Man 3" game grossed a mere $59 million on its opening day.) Halo's main character, Master Chief Petty Officer SPARTAN-117, known as "Master Chief," is downright beloved to players.

To compare "Halo 2" and "Halo 3 Gamers forum But for me, "Halo" still can't shake the image of the game that someone on high had anointed. And with all imperial, undemocratic decisions, it grates on my nerves. Talking with dedicated "Halo" fans — and there are many — I've argued a contrarian line: "You like 'Halo' because it's the only Xbox game that's in any way original."

Halo 3

It looks like Halo 3 is going to sport 4-player campaign co-op via Xbox Live and System Link - a feature that's been begged for inclusion since Halo 1.

Potentially - requiring Halo 3's single-player campaign isn't as rubbish as Halo 2 - this feature could be huge on Xbox Live - and indeed we'll be as happy a butcher's dog if it does in fact make it in.

Halo 3

"Halo 3 will set a new standard for interactive storytelling and social gaming by engaging consumers worldwide in Master Chief's epic battle to save humankind" says Microsoft in their press release. Peter Moore, VP of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business adds, "On Sept. 25, we intend to deliver a finale that will go down in entertainment history and leave people around the world with an experience that will be shared and enjoyed for years to come."
Microsoft announced that, on Tuesday, Sept. 25th, Halo 3 will release across the world, with a release date the following day for Europe. Canny observers will note that that's a mere two days after the Tokyo Game Show, an event Microsoft doesn't traditionally care about.

Halo 3

For all the deserved praise that Halo 2 receives, it was a rushed game, a fact made most obvious by the controversy over the abrupt ending. Bungie doesn't seem to be running into that issue with the third installment, however, a fact they've pointed out continually during their weekly updates. Last Friday was no different, as Frankie at Bungie decided to focus the spotlight on Halo 3's still-in-development cinematics.
With Halo 3, they have artists and designers who've worked on epic Hollywood projects like The Lord of the Rings and King Kong, not to mention a former Industrial Lights & Magic guy (read: Star Wars) working out the details on an "amazing space battle."

"...there's a bigger team, a team that has had the final cinematic script for much longer, and now has access to vastly more tools, resources and technology than ever before. These range from new tools for rigging facial animation, to better lighting and camera controls. Most of the improvements are a solid blend of technology and manpower this time around, and we hope the fruits of that labor end up as succulent as they look now."

This is just a taste of what gamers will experience later this fall when “Halo 3” goes on sale.

Yeah, but the thing is Halo 3 should release in time as first it was scheduled to release in November 2006 and now the date has been shifted back to summer 2007.

Halo 3

Halo 3 bets would be run along two tracks. Bungie’s Frank O’Connor told Next-Gen, “Like, we have time to be working on two separate betas? No, people have confused the issue. Bungie’s going to have a friends and family program which is basically a tiny alternative to the Crackdown BETA program. We’re going to get a bunch of beta invites sent to people in the Bungie community as well s those people who have bought Crackdown. Some people have decided that it was this whole separate beta but it’s the same beta, we’re just giving out our own tokens.”

Xbox Live

Microsoft has announced that Xbox Live is growing faster than it had anticipated with the service now topping six million members worldwide. Microsoft pledged at E3 last year that it would double the Xbox Live subscribers base from three million to six by the end of June 2007, a target which it has reached four months ahead of schedule.
Details about Xbox sales
More than 10 million Xbox 360’s have hit stores across 37 countries since its launch in November 2005. The Xbox 360 software attach rate (games sold per console) is 4.6 in the US, while the accessory attach rate is 2.9 units per console.
Details about Xbox Live
More than six million people subscribing to Xbox Live have contributed to gamers spending over 2.3 billion hours on the network playing games online worldwide. This is equal to 95 million days of gaming or over 260 000 years since the launch of Xbox Live in November 2002. Halo 2 leads the way with 710 million hours of online game play, followed by Gears of War and Xbox Live Arcade title Hexic HD.
More than two million voice and text messages are sent between members on Xbox Live every day. The average Xbox Live Gold subscriber has 22 friends on their Xbox Live friends list. Xbox 360 owners have unlocked nearly 300 million achievements for a total Gamerscore of nearly 7.5 billion.

Halo 3 arriving fall 2007

There it says it: Halo 3 arriving fall 2007! The release of this ‘teaser pic’ is the beginning of the Halo 3 marketing campaign. If you remember the Halo 2 marketing campaign, you’ll remember a series of pictures used over and over again. With Halo 3 they created a brand new identity to be used for marketing and box art. This first bit of art can also be downloaded as a wallpaper for your PC or Xbox 360

Halo 3 Multiplayer

Halo 3 Multiplayer UI updates and revealed a very handy new button, the A-Hole Button. As they say: “Teenagers, plus anonymity, plus microphone = idiot”.
Some of those who don’t like Halo’s Xbox Live Multiplayer gaming complain about the trash talk done by all the kiddies playing the game and screaming or turning on music through their headsets. With this new A-Hole Button Bungie clearly states they’re getting sick of it too and found a very good way to help you survive your Xbox Live matches with Halo 3. The A-Hole Button offers a shortcut to mute anyone instantly. “These kind of vocal buttmunches, as it turns out, are exactly as fun to play against as normal people, as long as you can’t hear them.”
Any muted player you have selected in your Xbox Live account overrides Halo 3’s new system, but that should actually enhance the choice of maroons you’re editing out of your gameplay. Best of all, it means fewer wasted or frustrating gameplay sessions. We’re doing our best to come up with lots of smart solutions for stuff like this, but honestly, we can’t be parents to some of these poltroons. We’re much more concerned with giving you guys the tools you need to silence them.
Let’s hope other developers take a good look at this option and consider to implant it in other popular Multiplayer titles, since it might improve behavior on Xbox Live a lot. This might also be the solution to all the annoying gadgets that have been springing up recently. Bungie’s Frank O’Conner further points out that it’s very satisfying to kill a trash talker knowing you’re making him more frustrated every time, without hearing him trash talking to you! Spike grenade Halo3

In the UNSC’s limited encounters with the spike grenade, we have learned much of its tactical applications both through contact with the Brutes and field tests of our own using discarded equipment. The quills of the spike grenade seem to be able to grip almost any surface upon which it’s been tested. This includes rock, glass and even some Covenant shield systems, unlike the plasma grenades which we have encountered before. The other feature unique to this grenade is its directional blast. Our researchers have discovered that the directional blast of the grenade is not designed to come out of one end or the other, but instead is relative to the surface against which it rests. If thrown against a perfectly flat wall, the grenade’s blast will disperse perpendicular to the wall.
Bungie also states that the grenades will be particularly effective on Snowbound, as the spike grenades stick to the shield doors on the map. The kill radius on the grenade is about 10ft., and the damage radius extends to 36ft. We leave you with a few of the anecdotes that Bungie had about the Type-2 Antipersonnel Fragmentation Grenade.

Halo 3 rumor

Halo 3 rumor will be released in North America on November 15. The website claims to have been given this information by an anonymous exec in Microsoft's Xbox group.
The website also reports that Halo 3 will be released in three editions: Legendary Edition will cost $99.99 and will include "three bonus discs of extra content and a collectible replica of a Spartan Mjolnir Mark VI helmet", Limited Edition will cost $69.99 and will include "special bonus content especially for the Halo enthusiast" and Regular Version at the usual $59.99.
With the info coming from an anonymous source, the launch date is still very much a rumour. Whilst a winter release would seem likely, late last year there were some murmurings that the game would be released much sooner than people were expecting - perhaps in the summer.

Hint: Dual Weapon Wields Halo 2

A plasma weapon destroys shields faster and a human weapon overloads the "damage threshold" for unshielded players, thus the best combo is always an Alien-Human combo.
1.) SMG and Plasma Rifle
2.) SMG and Plasma Pistol
3.) Magnum and Plasma Pistol
But don't think that these are better than just human or just plasma. Human-Human and Plasma-Plasma weapons work good too.
1.) SMG and Magnum
2.) Dual Magnums
There is also a very wide variety of good choices between your primary and secondary weapons but that list could go on for pages so go play and learn them.

The MA5C Halo 3

"The MA5C is built like a brick outhouse with Venetian blinds. You can pound on a mike foxtrot with it like it was a sledgehammer," said one happy soldier, whilst another insisted that he trusts the weapon like he trusts his own arms.
One of the guns you'll be doing the killing with in Halo 3 is the MA5C assault rifle, according to the Bungie website, marking the return of the weapon-type after its exclusion from Halo 2.
The MA5C's power will be somewhere between the original game's MA5B assault rifle and the BR55 Battle Rifle from Halo 2. You can also use the heavy butt of the gun as a strong melee attack, but it has no alternate fire option.
To get into more specifics, the MA5C has a few improvements of the MA5B including “a heavier barrel with a 1 in 7 twist; a redesigned cowling to house the electronics suite that reduces weight and increase pointability of weapon; and a redesigned handguard which is sturdier and provides a more positive grip.” But for us gamers, that’s all cosmetic.
As far as the MA5C’s performance is concerned, the first thing you might notice is the 32 round magazine clip. The new rifle is a cross between the assault rifle and the battle rifle. This ups the overall power and accuracy of the weapon over the MA5B to counterbalance the smaller clip size. The most effective use of the weapon is short and controlled bursts to take down the target.

Halo 2 for Vista

There's not all that much to say about Halo 2 for Vista, as the game does not include any major revamps from its two-year-old predecessor, but playing the game on PC does provide a new experience. I had the chance to get some hands on time with the game this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. On tap was Sanctuary, the largely symmetrical map set in temple ruins, added to the Xbox version of Halo 2 in a post-release map pack.

Windows Vista

Kicking off the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas with a bang, Microsoft Corp. today unveiled revolutionary games, technologies and partner support for the first-class gaming platform, Windows Vista.
CES attendees will get hands-on with 15 of the hottest Games for Windows titles, including some of the first games to deliver stunning graphics and gameplay through DirectX 10 that will challenge any game for superiority in visual fidelity: “Crysis” (EA Partners/Crytek) and “Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures” (Eidos Interactive Ltd./Funcom). Gamers will also experience “Shadowrun” from Microsoft Game Studios, the first of many titles that will bring the Live gaming and entertainment network on Windows Vista for true cross-platform gameplay.
In addition, during the CES keynote address, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Entertainment and Devices Division President Robbie Bach demonstrated the ease and simplicity of connecting people who play games on a Windows Vista PC to friends who play on Xbox 360 for a cross-platform game challenge with “UNO” (Mattel, Inc.) — one of the many new upcoming casual games optimized specifically for Windows Vista.

Halo 3 Xbox

Halo 3 buzz again after a video showing some footage appeared on Xbox Marketplace. Personally I am VERY excited about this game as both Halo 1 and 2 are easily the best console FPS games ever made. I know people say the story is a little weak but really it's pretty decent for the type of game it is. It's very summer blockbuster, which makes perfect sense and works well. Yes Halo 2's single player game wasn't as good as the first game but then they'd set themselves quite the challenge to beat it. Halo 3 is going to kick ass and anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

PlayStation 3

In only one month, the PlayStation 3 has sold more units in Japan than the Xbox 360 did in its one-year presence in the land of the rising sun.
The Xbox 360 has sold around 180,000 units in Japan since it went on sale a year ago. In contrast, Sony sold more than 190,000 PlayStation 3 systems in just one month after the console launched. It is worth mentioning that the PlayStation 3 would have definitely sold more units if Sony would not have experienced those manufacturing problems with the blue laser diodes that caused shortages in the U.S. and Japan plus the delay of the console in Europe.
